Why Academic Coaching?

Why an Academic Coach might be just what your kid needs (even if they've tried tutoring).

Parents often ask me, “How is Academic Coaching different from tutoring?” It’s a great question—especially if you’ve already tried the subject-specific route and feel like you're still missing something. So here are my top three reasons why working with an Academic Coach can be a game-changer—particularly if your child needs more than just help in math or reading.

1. We build skills that go way beyond the classroom.

Let’s be honest—most of us haven’t used the quadratic formula since high school. (No judgment if you have!) Kids often struggle to see the point of learning things that seem disconnected from "real life." That’s where Academic Coaching comes in.

Rather than zeroing in on just one subject, I use schoolwork as a tool to teach broader, more lasting skills: planning, organizing thoughts, staying focused, and pushing through challenges. We’re still doing math, sure—but we're also building executive function skills that apply to everything from writing an essay to managing a busy schedule... and yes, maybe even life after graduation.

2. The approach is 100% customized to your kid.

Many tutoring programs follow a set curriculum. It’s structured—but not always flexible. With Academic Coaching, every session is personalized. Some days we’re tackling a history assignment; other days, we’re breaking down that growing mountain of to-dos into a doable plan.

It's all about meeting your child where they are, each day, while still keeping our big-picture goals in mind. The result? Support that helps them thrive in school and develop the tools to handle whatever comes next.

3. I get to be the “cool adult” they’ll actually listen to.

Let’s face it—preteens and teens are biologically wired to think their parents just don’t get it. Even the wisest advice (repeated 47 times) can fall on deaf ears if it’s coming from Mom or Dad. That’s where I come in.

As an Academic Coach, I work hard to build genuine, trusting relationships with the students I support. Because I am not their parent, there's less pressure to impress me. When kids feel seen, respected, and understood, they’re more open to guidance— even if it sounds suspiciously like something their parents already said. And for you? That means a little less nagging and a little more peace at home.

If you're curious about whether Academic Coaching might be a good fit for your child, I’d love to chat. No quadratic formulas required—promise.
